The Second Batch of Offshore Wind Power Concession Projects Bidding To Double the Total Scale

The start of the second batch of china offshore wind power concession projects bidding have brought new opportunities to wind power parts manufacturers, to module manufacturers and wind farm developers. The total construction scale will be between 1.5 to 2 million kilowatts, which doubled in scale compared with the first batch.

Deputy Secretary of National Energy Bureau Liu Qi, said, our aim is to reach 30 million kilowatts in year 2020 to become the world offshore wind power superpower. Up to now China has built the offshore wind power with installed capacity of 1.38 million kilowatts, which means that there is still much room for the development of offshore wind power. It is predicted that the future market will reach hundreds of billions.

Offshore wind resources are more concentrated in the southeast coastal provinces with developed economy and relatively large demand for electricity. Nearby offshore wind power development could directly address the local demand for electricity, which could avoid "a thousand miles long distance transmission scheduling", thus easing the pressure to the grid with obvious advantage. Besides, offshore wind power has little negative impact on the environment, with high wind speed and stability, less dust, larger power generation capacity, and is suitable for more powerful turbine units. The operation could not only reduce the unit wear and extend the use life, but also reduce the costs.

For now, the higher threshold and the cost of offshore wind power technology make the investment costs of offshore wind power is twice of the onshore wind. But it does not mean that offshore wind power is disadvantageous, which has a higher efficiency in power generation efficiency. Take 1.5 MW wind turbines for example, each year the on-shore power generation time is 1800-2000 hours, whereas offshore can be up to 2000-2300 hours. Offshore wind could generate 450,000 kwh more of electricity than onshore wind power; and because of the short transport distance, the power loss and the construction costs of large-scale UHV transmission lines is greatly reduced; besides, it is close to the electricity load center so there will be less network pressure and the cost recovery will be much faster. On the whole it has high development value.
