Along with the continuous depletion of oil resources, energy researchers around the world are looking for new energy alternatives. In year 2010, after repeated experiments, Professor of Southeast University School of Energy and Environment of China, Xiao Rui, finally extracted biomass liquid fuel via the pyrolysis of straw.
The study of Xiao Rui succeeded in getting new energy from biomass, filling the gap in the field of both domestic and foreign countries. In November 2010, Xiao Rui's research result was published in the journal "Science", having aroused the concerns of the industry.
"To achieve the industrialization of new technologies we need to address the costs, environmental and other problems." Xiao Rui introduced, the initial catalysts for extracting biomass gasoline and diesel from straw is platinum. Platinum is a precious metal, so the costs are very high. But now, after repeated research and improvement, he found Nickel and Cobalt catalyst instead of platinum, the cost has dropped significantly, "Next, we will find cheaper metal materials to work as the catalyst."
During the tests, Xiao Rui and his research team found that cotton stalks are rich in lignin, which could be used to extract much more oily production than other crops, straw. So, Xiao Rui found a company to set up factories in China's main cotton producing areas in Dongying, Shandong Province, and would put the project into operation this year.
Xiao Rui introduced that the goal of the project industrialization is to produce the "polyol" similar to gasoline and diesel, which can feed the motor vehicle directly. In accordance with the preliminary planning, the project "polyol" annual output will reach 1000 tons. In the future, as the technology matures, the production scale will be expanded in Shandong, Xinjiang and other places, at that time, the cost and price of the product will certainly be greatly reduced.
